The majority of posts on tumblr were posted before the new feature and don’t have alt descriptions. I rely on image descriptions for a few reasons:ġ. I don’t personally use screen readers much, but when I heard alt text had become a new feature I did have this debate myself. I assumed tumblr was still behind and had not explored this option myself. Thank you for letting me know about this! If you don’t want to do both, include the image description. My ALT text and image descriptions in the first GIF and the pancakes picture are probably a bit much. This can also avoid redundant descriptions. For the Both is Good GIF, I simply used the ALT text to mention what it was and where it was from, using the image description to go into more detail. The ALT can be a short description and the image description can allow for more detail. My recommendation is to do both, as I have done in this post. Image descriptions can also allow for more people to engage with the picture, whether they only use Braille displays or because the image contains text and it is hard to read.

The screen-reader just says “image” when it finds an image without ALT text. It can help people kept track of how many images there are and they can know something about it when they find it rather than that it is an “image”. It might be helpful to include a very brief description in ALT text, at least when it has a word limit. Videos will still need image descriptions and probably transcripts for maximum accessibility for the D/deaf and so people using screen-readers can keep track of what image description happens when as they watch the video. The text box was also cramped and impossible to scroll through once I typed something. It may not be useful for very detailed pictures. I was able to fit the image description below the picture into the ALT text box, but I had to write it a few times. However, you’re correct in that it still has limitations. Perhaps what you heard about it not working with some screen-readers has since been fixed. So far, it works with my screen-reader and is relatively easy to add to pictures and GIFs.
